The Class
a Well-Being Studio
The client came to CCA with the goal of opening her own free-standing “well being” studio, after having previously sublet spaces. From the studio’s website: “The Class is a music-driven somatic exercise method founded in 2011 …. to regulate the nervous system and release stuck energy by moving the physical body. It integrates a unique combination of movement, breath, music, and sound release to create physical, mental, and emotional openings.” The design challenge was to build out a floor in an early 1900s building for a program that amplified music and created foot impact vibration without disturbing the tenants above and below. CCA collaborated with Grant engineering to float an entire new steel floor structure to isolate the foot noise from the old timber joists below. The ceiling of the studio space was also isolated from the timber joists above.
This project was a collaboration with Elizabeth Kohn Design (interior decoration) and LSTN Consultants (acoustics).
