U.S. Navy Memorial
Market Square, Washington, D.C.
This project encompasses the design of a new urban plaza and park, Market Square, and the U.S. Navy Memorial at its center. The Memorial consists of a great circular stone map of the world surrounded by nearly an acre of symbolic ocean in the form of cascading fountains. A series of bas-reliefs depicting historical Navy events defines the principal entrance on Pennsylvania Avenue. The plaza regularly serves as a seating area for concerts given by the U.S. Navy Band who perform on the cascading steps to the north. To the south of the memorial, across Pennsylvania Avenue, two rows of vertical fountains in front of the National Archives Building effectively complete the composition of the park and the terminus of L’Enfant’s Eighth Street axis. This project was widely publicized in The Washington Post. Michael Costantin developed this work as project architect while at Conklin Rossant Architects.
